Under the National Endowment for the Arts
New Public Works Grant Program, the City of Chicago invites licensed architects
to compete in a design competition for an Intergenerational Learning Center.
The Intergenerational Learning Center is
a prototypical social service center comprised of a Senior Satellite Center,
Head Start Classrooms, and Grand Family Homes, which is a Chicago program
providing dwelling units for adults over 60 years old who have custody of their
grandchildren. The center will serve as a model for care taking of the elderly
and the young, as well as a place for children to learn from their elders and
for seniors from the next generation. The center must be designed to meet
Universal Design Criteria for barrier-free learning and living opportunities for
people of varying abilities.
The open-call portion of the competition
is open to licensed architects and architectural firms. A panel of jurors will
select five architects on January 27th, 2003. Each of the five architects will
be given an honorarium of $15,000 plus a travel stipend to prepare a model,
schematic plans and elevations of the proposed facility and surrounding
landscape. The five competing architects will be required to participate in a
Design Symposium at Archeworks, an alternative design school in Chicago, and
present their designs at an Awards Ceremony at the Chicago Architecture
Foundation.
One winner will be selected by the Jury
in July 2003 to receive an additional $15,000 plus the possibility of entering
into an agreement with the Chicago Public Building Commission for full
architectural services.
Submission criteria and other information
can be found on the Design Competition's official website.
