Jointly run by designer Dan Frydman of Inigo Media & architect Adrian
Welch of Edinburgh Contemporary Architecture
The date for the judging and announcement allows integration of the Student
Prize with various Spring Term courses. The Press Conference will be held at the
Balmoral Hotel on March 11th, here in Edinburgh. An exhibition of the
prizewinning projects/concepts will start at the Matthew Gallery, Edinburgh
University on March 17th.
Application forms for the three Prizes and a map of the specific area noting
which buildings are demolished and which are fire-damaged are now online.
The Ideas Competition is intended as a springboard to the rebuilding – a
strong inspiration and influence on both the public’s thinking and on the
eventual arbiters of the site’s new appearance. It is important that is keeps
the momentum up and hence the quick start after the fire. We are not considering
a Technical Panel – this should not be a weighty affair but an enjoyable
series of discussions about the theories and practicalities of developing the
site.
The panel is to be jointly-chaired by Dan and myself and will be structured
around the three Prizes.

Description
This is purely an ideas competition, but we hope it acts as a catalyst for
the eventual redevelopment.
As well as sketch proposals the aim is to gather feedback from the public
that could inform the rebuilding. The competition should include radical
proposals from architects and students alike and form an inspiration to those
numerous bodies with an interest in this area.
The extent of the site is determined by individuals submitting: we envisage
purely a core scope of buildings between Guthrie St, Chambers St, Cowgate and
South Bridge. Sites widely in excess of this area could be disqualified.
The proposal may be a subtle intervention of vertical circulation, a cluster
of new forms, modern insertions but with a return to former frontages and
closes, a simply a masterplan. It does not have to be a building per se, or even
a group of buildings. Even proposals to reinstate demolitions are possible.
Group entries reflecting the site’s diversity are to be encouraged.
We aim to issue feedback from this competition to the relevant body or bodies
entrusted with rebuilding the area of Old Town affected.
