The Purpose:
As part of a long-term plan to enhance the contemporary image of the city, the
municipal authorities have announced an international idea competition for the
design of the Water Front Area in Gwangalli which has rich historical
inscriptions, yet not be properly defined as an important part of the
metropolis. Moreover, the recent construction of the Gwangan Grand Bridge
changed the entire cityscape as well as the seascape. The current system of
spaces is mostly the result of the casual changes in the car traffic patterns.
It is determined neither by the visionary schemes nor by conscious intention to
shape the Water Front Area. The Area is surrounded today by disordered
structures without urbanistic quality and waiting to be re-designed. The
competition is questioning architects and architectural students how this area
can be designed to provide its own identity.
