Bridge competition aims to find the next
Leonardo da Vinci
We want students to come up with a design for a bridge that is capable of
supporting pedestrians and cyclists, but not cars or lorries. More details are
available in the full design brief, which will be sent to all schools and Young
Engineers clubs who register for the competition but the most important rule is
that the main structural elements of the bridge must be built out of timber.

We want you to follow in the footsteps of the great Renaissance artist,
engineer and inventor and come up with a design for a bridge that both looks
good and works well as an engineering structure.
We are looking for a bridge that is capable of supporting pedestrians and
cyclists, but not cars or lorries. More details are available in the full design
brief, which will be sent to all schools and Young Engineers clubs who register
for the competition, (fill in the form by clicking on the link left) but the
most important rule is that the main structural elements of the bridge must be
built out of timber.
The designs can be either produced traditionally or by CAD and will be judged on
both aesthetic value and structural integrity, and all shortlisted designs will
be checked and tested by timber engineering experts to ensure they can stand up
to real loads. Judges are particularly keen to see designs that acknowledge the
importance of sustainability and the environment while creating a landmark in
their own right.
There is a fantastic prize on offer as the designers of the best bridge –
and their tutor – will win a trip to Norway to visit the Ås bridge, see
timber being produced and do some sightseeing.
If you think your school or college could come up with a winning design, send
away now for full details. The registration pack includes the full design brief
and technical information about designing in timber, as well as details of where
to go to find out more.
You have until the 31 October 2003 to design your bridge.
Brief available – March 2003
Design period – March to end October
Submission deadline – end October
