On April 17, 2003, on the 21st anniversary of the signing of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Equality Day, Dr. Israel Asper announced the establishment of The Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The project is a joint partnership of The Asper Foundations, the Government of Canada, Province of Manitoba, City of Winnipeg and The Forks North Portage Partnership.

The vision of the project is to create a distinctive, architecturally exceptional museum that will help to eliminate intolerance through recognition of human rights as the foundation for human equality, dignity, and freedom worldwide. The museum has made groundbreaking history, as it will be the largest and perhaps only human rights museum in the world.

The issue of human rights is of such a worldwide concern that the decision  was made to conduct an international architectural competition to select an architect and design for this important project.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will be unique and one of Canada's most important national museums. By its very nature, this Museum will also have a powerful international presence.

Human rights and intolerance are fundamental issues - deeply connected to every society and community throughout human history. The Museum has a worldwide Vision to eliminate intolerance and its Mission states that human rights and tolerance are to be presented in a world context.

Canada has taken significant pioneering and continuing steps to promote and enact human rights issues - with Canadians contributing to the first UN Declaration of Human Rights, to our leading roles in international peacekeeping to creating successful models for multiculturalism.

The Museum will also be the largest institution of its kind in the world dedicated to the understanding of issues associated with human rights and intolerance. The Museum will be a permanent statement to the world about our essential values and beliefs - and our desire to work with peoples of every nation to promote the cause of human rights.
