The Journal of Architectural Education invites submissions of conceptually
innovative design work and teaching that investigate ideas and practices of
"recycling" in architecture. We solicit creative investigations that
rescue, redeem and reuse buildings, materials, land, ruins, refuse, waste,
by-products, and salvage. We also encourage larger scale studies of
infrastructure, industrial sites, landfill, terrain vague, neighborhoods, malls
and housing. JAE seeks projects that reflect critically on the cultural cycles
that lead to the devaluation and repossession of once-viable artifacts. Who
participates, or is excluded, politically, technically and creatively in the
processes that lead to the re-evaluation, reclamation, and recycling of the
obsolete? What methods and techniques are used in the regeneration, conversion
and transformation of artifacts and debris? What are the tangible benefits and
costs to the environment, economy, social health and cultural heritage? Does the
ethic of reuse replace the modernist "cult of the new", with a
neo-modern "cultivation of renewal"? Or do the effects of recycling
accelerate the consumption of both goods and ideas? How is recycling deployed as
a tactic for the subversion, reprogramming, and reversal of status and meaning
of cultural detritus? At what sacrificial point does a vital entity become an
objet trouvi, vulnerable to the formulation of a trope?
Successful submissions shall address some aspect of the issues cited above in
word and image. We welcome built and unbuilt design works, speculative projects,
and studio teaching.
