Yarışma Özeti(Summary):
Hammerfest is the northernmost town in Norway and in Europe. The livelihood of Hammerfest has historically been closely linked to the Barents Sea, both in terms of transport and natural resources. The Snøhvit-project is now being developed, and in 2006 the production and shipment of LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) from Hammerfest will be initiated, bringing the town into an entirely new era. Today new alternative energy concepts are being explored, e.g. gas fuel containing no CO2, wind power and tidal hydroelectric power. The notion of Hammerfest as a multi-energy town is therefore a crucial premise for future development.

Hammerfest Ideas Competition

Open International Idea and Project Competition at Hammerfast In collaboration with Hammerfest Næringsinvest AS, and Hammerfest Havnevesen KF (Harbour Authority), the Municipality of Hammerfest Council invites to an open international idea and project competition to develop the town’s old Findus site and to build an Arctic Culture Centre.

Theme of the competition of ideas:
Today large parts of the town are in a process of transformation. Among other things an old fish processing site, the Findus site, will receive new functions and be developed to strengthen the town’s identity, turning it into a beautiful and attractive area of the urban centre. A plan is to be developed that takes care of the area’s various functions. By means of the architectural competition we wish to receive as broad a range of ideas as possible for the further development of this central area, and to perceive how the imminent cultural centre (ACC) and a future hotel together may become a cost effective and attractive congress centre.

The theme of the project competition:
The Municipality of Hammerfest has decided to erect a culture centre –Arctic Culture Centre (ACC) – with a net area of 3000 m2 The centre constitutes the project part of the architectural competition. ACC will be the first new building on the Findus site, and will thus importantly condition further developments of the relationship between Hammerfest town centre and the sea.
Together the programme and the site offer many interesting challenges and possibilities. The ambition is to build a culture centre of international dimensions, an attraction renowned for good architecture and artistic quality. By means of the architectural competition the commissioning parties wish to pursue the artistic, attractional and creative paths enabled by the available funding. It is desirable that the participants utilise international experience from a number of disciplinary fields. The commissioners therefore encourage the formation of international teams that can provide comprehensive responses to the task at hand.
