Topic of the workshop: Today, Turin sees its vocation as a regional capital of Europe. A new phase of transition is underway: the 21st century poses many challenges; industry will not be the only sector to witness great development in Turin. The image of the city will also change, for tourists and citizens alike: the metropolitan area will be integrated into the international system, economic development will be accompanied by a renewal of the town's physical image. Large-scale urban planning reforms are being made: the renewal of existing infrastructures, the construction of new, the upgrading of the town's historic districts and the revival of peripheral zones, the doubling of green areas, the highlighting of the river-side environment. Four current projects are exemplary: the conversion of the old Lingotto automobile factory into a vast fair and exhibition centre, equipped with all attendant cultural and hotel facilities; the upcoming transformation of the abandoned steel works area into "Environment Park", the first environmental technology park in Europe, extending over a surface of 100 hectares; the doubling of the Politecnico over an area of 13 hectares, with significant investments in research and training; and lastly, the integration of the railway junction with the new "passante" (three lines and 15 kilometres of underground track) that will revolutionise access to and mobility around the metropolitan area. Realising the central role played today by telecommunications systems in modern economic development, Turin is also becoming Italy's first city with cable connections.
