CIPA 2003 XIXth International Symposium, "New Perspectives to Save Cultural Heritage"
30 Eylül - 04 Ekim 2003, Antalya

Anatolia is the cradle of civilizations with thousands of years of history, a geographical focal point for all humanity. Numerous civilizations rose and fell on these lands, lighting the way to the civilized world. Wise men who laid the foundations of science, people of culture and thought who still inspire artists of our time, left Anatolia to all of us, a cradle of one of the oldest of sciences: that of measuring. Anatolia has seen the Hatti, Hitite, Trojan, Urartu, Phrygian, Carian, Lydian and Lycian civilizations. Hellenistic civilization grew and developed in Ephesus, Pergamon and Halicarnassus. Statues of Cybele, Zeus, Apollon, Mithra and Hermes adorn Anatolia. The first Christians escaping from Roman oppression settled in Anatolia at Cappadocia. Saint Nicholas was born and lived in this land, also Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The home of the Virgin Mary and Seven Cities of the Apocalypse are part of the cultural inheritance of Anatolia. In the flow of history, this land has been the centre of the Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman Empires and is now the modern Republic of Turkey.

After having signed the World Heritage Convention in 1983, Turkey has now 9 locations registered on the World Heritage List and 2 more sites are candidates for which documentation is still in progress. Our desire to host this International Symposium of CIPA-Heritage Documentation in the pearl of Mediterranean Coast, Antalya, is based on this rich and cultural heritage.

The concept of “New Perspectives to Save Cultural Heritage, in Turkey, Cradle of Civilizations” has been chosen as the theme of the Symposium, to express the fact that the acquisition, processing, use of new technologies and support of the dialogue between Information Users and Information Providers will play a vital role in future professional activities. The importance of these activities to the conservation community should be stressed and this Symposium should make an effort towards its further development. The Organising Committee hopes that this theme will be emphasised during special and technical sessions. All Symposium officials and participants are invited to make contributions to this theme.

Prospective authors are invited to prepare an abstract of 400 words maximum of their proposed paper in English. These have to contain enough detail to clearly convey approach and results of the work, the idea behind, and the very reason why it should be considered an interesting message for the reader.
