Speakers:
Dr Dina D'Ayala, University of Bath
A graduate of the Universita' di Roma la Sapienza, Italy, Dr D'Ayala is the
developer of a procedure called FaMIVE for the failure mechanism identification
and vulnerability evaluation of historic buildings in earthquake-prone areas.
The procedure has been successfully applied to Alfama District, Lisbon,
Portugal, Nocera Umbria, Italy, and Offida, Marche, Italy following the
Umbria-Marche earthquake of 1997. It has also been applied more recently to
Lalitpur, Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, and in will shortly form part of a study on
buildings in Vittorio Veneto, Italy. She has direct experience of the seismicity
of the North Anatolian fault, and has extensively studied the effect of the
Kocaeli earthquake of 1999, and is the editor of a volume on the effect of the
earthquake.
Dr John Hurd, John Hurd Conservation
President-Elect of the Earth Structures Committee of the International Council
on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), John Hurd is a conservator with a Higher
Diploma in Conservation Science from Lincoln College of Arts. He is currently
involved with conservation projects funded by the UNESCO/Japan Trust Fund in
Otrar, Kazakhstan, and Krashnaya Rechka, Kyrgyzstan, and has also worked in
Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Oman and the Caucasus. He has a particular interest
in the performance of materials and their appropriateness in conservation and is
a Fellow of the Department of Archaeology (Institute of Advanced Architectural
Studies), University of York.
Dr David Yeomans, University of Liverpool
Dr Yeomans is Chairman of the U.K. Wood Committee of ICOMOS and U.K.
representative on the ICOMOS International Structures Committee. In addition to
his academic work in the UK, he has also run conservation training programmes in
the U.S.A., Middle East and Asia. He has extensive experience in the historical
study and analysis of traditional buildings, is a historian of building
technology and has published books and numerous papers on these subjects. He has
worked as a UNESCO expert in Nepal and Turkey and was involved in the
feasibility study for the Rehabilitation of Fener and Balat Programme.
