The first GOOD DESIGN~ Competition and Exhibition was
organized in Chicago in 1950 by Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., former curator of The
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), with installations by Charles and Ray Eames, Eero
Saarinen, Russell Wright, and George Nelson. The goal was to inform consumers
about the merit of modern design.

AN INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRIAL AND GRAPHIC DESIGN COMPETITION
Introduction:
The first GOOD DESIGN~ Competition and Exhibition was organized in Chicago in
1950 by Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., former curator of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA),
with installations by Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Russell Wright, and
George Nelson. The goal was to inform consumers about the merit of modern
design.
Four decades later, The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design
continues to organize the original GOOD DESIGN program. The goals are to create
a revived awareness about contemporary design excellence and to honor both
products and industry leaders in design and manufacturing that have chartered
new directions for competitive products in the world marketplace. The emphasis
of the GOOD DESIGN program is on quality design of the highest aesthetic. The
Chicago Athenaeum's GOOD DESIGN program forwards the ideals of a design process
that embodies product excellence and endurance.
In 2003, the new GOOD DESIGN program recognizes products, industrial and
graphic designers, and manufacturers for their contributions to contemporary
design. Submissions to the program are judged by a jury of distinguished design
professionals on criteria of the highest aesthetic in terms of innovative
design, form, materials, construction, concept, function, and utility.
Format: Product design:
Anything produced and/or designed from 2001 to the present is eligible
including: Office and Residential Furniture, Housewares, Lighting, Appliances,
Transportation, Consumer Products, Business and Industrial Equipment,
Hardware/Tools, Machinery, Electronics, Communications and Medical Equipment,
Computer Equipment, Environmental Design. All submitted products must have been
produced by a manufacture or scheduled for production.
Format: Graphics/Packaging design:
Any graphic and packaging design produced and/or de-signed from 2001 to the
present is eligible including: Books, Magazines, Advertisements, Catalogues,
Handbooks, Posters. and Digital and Media Interfaces.
Outcome:
The winning submissions to the 2003 GOOD DESIGN program are exhibited at The
Chicago Athenaeum, October, 2003 through January, 2004.
Entry fee:
The fee is $175.00 USD per entry. Checks are made payable to The Chicago

Deadline:
All entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time, July
15, 2003. Please submit materials to: The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of
Architecture and Design 190 South Roselle Road, Schaumburg, Illinois 60193 USA.
Requirements
Each entry must have its own completed entry form. Entries without forms will
not qualify for the review. Multiple entries are welcome. Each product must be
accompanied by an application form; a 35mm slide of the product or products; a
B/W or color photograph; and a one-page description. Plus one color digital
image per project in BMP or TIF format on CD or floppy disk (300 resolution/1200
x 830 pixels) per image. Graphic design entries should include one copy of the
completed project.
Winning submissions to the Museum's
GOOD DESIGN program are accessioned into The Chicago Athenaeum's Permanent
Design Collection. Selected designers and manufac- tures are allowed to use the
Museum's name and GOOD DESIGN logo in publications, promotions, and marketing as
specified in a joint legal agreement with the Museum.
