Yarışma Özeti(Summary):
Contemporary architecture is more and more integrated with intelligent systems.
Entrances, façades, and fixtures can be monitored by automatic systems, and
their use influences both the functional choice, and the choice of the
components. The automatic architecture today represents a status that qualifies
the social value of a building, but also an actual contribution to the
construction of architecture without hurdles. Automation, especially when taking
fixtures into consideration, introduces new possibilities to reach an open way
of thinking of architecture for the larger public.

Contemporary architecture is more and more integrated with intelligent

the components. The automatic architecture today represents a status that
qualifies the social value of a building, but also an actual contribution to the

of thinking of architecture for the larger public.
DITEC S.p.A., a leading company specialising in automatic entrances, and
Faenza Editore promote an international architecture award in order to incentive
the use of automatic components and systems aimed at architectural works. More
specifically, it is the award’s objective to nominate and to reward the best
architectural works where automatic entrances and/or automatic systems for
openings, the control of natural light and/or other automatic systems for the
control of façades and fixtures, are used.
The award is running under the patronage of:
· First Faculty of Architecture, University “La Sapienza” of Rome
· Faculty of Engineering in Lecco, Milan Polytechnic
· Ecole d’Architecture of Lille
The “Automatic Architecture” competition comprises a two-section
international award. The first section is open to architects, engineers,
industrial designers and designers in general who are registered with the
respective professional associations and/or registers. Works of architecture,
either completed or at the stage of design by the expiry date of the
competition, featuring a will participate in this section.
The second section is dedicated to students attending the faculties of
architecture or engineering, as well as design schools. The works presented by
the students must be co-ordinated by a member of the teaching staff. Theses,
results of research projects and elaborated exercises prepared within the
respective courses of study that feature the design of works of architecture
incorporating intelligent automatic systems in the sphere of residential,
commercial, service or industrial building will participate in this section.
Individual or group participation is allowed in both sections. Regarding
group participation, whilst acknowledging that the paternity of the work
presented pertains to the whole group, a group leader shall be nominated as the
only contact person for the organising committee of the award. Competitors may
participate with one or more proposals, as long as these are presented
separately.
Registration for the award is free and open from March 20, 2002 until the
expiry date of the competition, scheduled on December 16, 2002. In order to
register, competitors shall send their application form downloadable as well as
further details and useful information from the websites: www.ditec.it,
www.faenza.com, www.fabriziobianchetti.com
- or send their application, either by letter or by e-mail to the competition
organising secretariat.
The Jury will be composed as follows:
Dr. Eng. Gabriele Del Mese (Ove Arup), expert in building technology;
Prof. Arch. Eric Dubosc (Dubosc&Landowski), Ecole d'Architecture of Lille;
Prof. Arch. Giancarlo Rosa, Faculty of Architecture "La Sapienza" of
Roma;
Prof. Eng. Marco Imperadori, Faculty of Engineering of Lecco, Milan Polytechnic;
Dr. Arch. Fabrizio Bianchetti, Editor of Frames magazine;
Dr. Armando Vecchi, Managing Director of DITEC S.p.A.
All entrants will be rewarded with a diploma of participation, while all
winners will be rewarded with a plaque.
The jury will assign following prizes:
First section: Award for professional designers
1st prize: 5.000,00 Euros
2nd prize: 2.500,00 Euros

However, should the Jury decide not to assign one or more prizes, the available
amounts will be used as refund money for meritorious works.
“Automation, especially when talking about fixtures, opens new
possibilities to actually provide an architecture targeting the public at large,
said Renato Calza, Managing Director of DITEC S.p.A. “Much is expected from
architecture at the beginning of this new Millennium: The possibility to travel
while staying home or at the office is not simply based on the presence of
Internet, or of a TV set; the first “trip” performed by the human being is
the one based on his environment, where architecture plays a prominent role, be
it in residential, commercial, service or industrial buildings. The adaptation
of homes through the automation of certain functions, apart from responding to
the ambition of enhancing the general architectural image, can offer new market
perspectives while taking integrated projects for the public at large into
account. These are basically the ideas that have led to the international
competition “Automatic Architecture”, was Mr. Calza’s conclusion.
“It is not by chance that our company’s denomination is DIffusione di
TECnologia (spreading of technology): It is in fact our main objective to spread
the automation devices for entrances and for fixtures more and more, meaning
that we are working both on the positive expansion of the company, and on the
progress of the comfort for people, in public buildings as well as at their
homes. The International Architecture Award represents a serious possibility to
look for new strengths and trends that might prove helpful for our company”.
“A building is usually designed, even when this is done by the most
talented designers, like a passive space within which and with which the user
can only interact in successive phases” said Architect Fabrizio Bianchetti.
“The introduction of automatic systems can transform the building into
something active and able to interact with the activities that are taking place
inside. Checking of façades, entrances, as well as energetic savings said Arch.
Bianchetti are just a few possibilities; we expect to see many projects
translated into reality by the award’s participants.”
