Yarışma Özeti(Summary):
Landscape and architectural design are deeply interrelated disciplines in the
formation of settings for humans and other life forms. Architectural choices are
always landscape choices in that landscapes serve as the unwitting subtext of
work. Given this condition, we ask what are the ways in which architecture
involves, ignores, rejects, and /or conjoins the landscape? How do architects
see and act upon it; and conversely, how does the landscape act upon us?
This special issue of the Journal of Architectural Education is designed to
raise questions about architecture, landscape architecture and landscapes. For
example, projects might investigate the relationships between architecture and
landscape architecture to explore the cross-disciplinary border disputes,
tenuous relationships, and congenial collaboration. We challenge authors to
explore the philosophical and theoretical issues intertwined within these
disciplines and to consider how these differences frame practice and place. And
importantly, we are interested in design work on the landscape itself, how do we
and/or might we think about it, address it, conserve it and make it.

Submission Requirements for Design Work
1. Seven (7) copies of a 4-page presentation of the project in 8.5" x
11" bound format. Supporting text of no more than 1000 words should clearly
and succinctly explain the project, its critical intentions, and how it sheds
light on the theme topic. As emphasis will be placed on graphic explanation,
visual material should be selected and coordinated to best articulate the ideas
pursued within a black-and-white print medium.
These 4-page presentations will be sent to jury members for advance review; they
will also serve to give a sense of how the project can be articulated in finite
form.
2. One portfolio of supplementary images and text in 8.5" x 11"
bound format (max. 100 pages). This material will be reviewed at the Design
Jury.
3. Digital file(s) of the sample layout and text (PDF file format preferred).
Digital portfolio images would also be welcomed. Disk formats: CDs and 100MB Zip
disks. Please do NOT email submissions.
4. A separate cover letter containing the names of the faculty member(s),
students, institution, address, phone/fax numbers, and email address. No
identification of designers whatsoever should appear on the 4-page presentation
or the portfolio submission.
5. A printed and checked copy of the "Submission Checklist for Design
Calls" to verify that all required items are included in the submission.
Incomplete submissions cannot be forwarded to the reviewing committee. Download
the checklist from the JAE website: www.flashgun.com/JAE
Submissions will be blind-juried by a panel of design educators and
professionals. Label the package "Design: Landscape Call" and send to:
Howard Smith, JAE Managing Editor, 1400 Randall Court, Los Angeles CA 90065. For
return of materials, please include self-addressed and stamped envelope.
