At its principal site in Rome, the Academy operates a
program of fellowships and residencies that has at its core the development of
gifted American artists and scholars. Each year, through a national competition,
the Academy awards fellowships in the fine arts and pre- and post-doctoral
fellowships in the humanities. Rome Prize winners pursue independent projects,
which vary in content and scope, for periods ranging from six months to two
years at the Academy. Stipends range from $10,000 to $20,000 (depending on the
terms of the fellowships). To complement their work, a series of walks, talks
and tours in and around Rome, Italy and the Mediterranean is offered during the
year. The Academy's Rome Prize winners are part of a residential community of 65
to 70 people each year. The artists and scholars who make up this
multidisciplinary community also have the opportunity to foster their work
through exchanges with members of the Italian and newly-united European artistic
and scholarly communities.
