St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Church,
Toronto, Ontario, Canada, invites Architects, Designers and Multidisciplinary
Teams to participate in an open anonymous international design competition. The
competition includes a campus master plan and the basic architectural idea of a
Cathedral to seat a congregation of approximately 2000, second Church to seat
1000, Bishop's residence, academic school, day care, community centre, museum,
retirement home, senior citizen apartment building and office building.
The project is envisioned to create a
land-mark and state-of-the-art design that blends traditional concepts with all
its historical and spiritual values, providing an idyllic space of peace,
serenity and beauty; a symphony of shape, texture and colour expressing the
religious aspect of the Christian Coptic Orthodox faith and tradition, yet in a
modern vocabulary. The main objective of the competition is to achieve a layout
of the proposed Village with appropriate spatial relationships of its components
on a city block of twelve acres at the entrances of the Town of Markham and the
City of Toronto, Ontario.
The Copts are the descendants of the
ancient Egyptians with a history dating back to the times of the Pharaohs. They
were converted to Christianity by St. Mark the apostle at the beginning of the
Christian era and played a prominent role in the formation of the early
Christian doctrine. In recent years there has been considerable emigration of
Copts to North America and the Toronto Coptic community has grown rapidly. The
Church is the central focus of the Copts' sense of identity, faith, and communal
support. St. Mark's is the first Coptic Orthodox Church established in North
America, and this Project celebrates its fortieth anniversary. The congregation
hopes for a sublime expression of their faith, traditions and spiritual values
in a contemporary architectural vocabulary.
