The City of Perth Amboy, the Perth Amboy Board of Education and the National
Endowment for the Arts, in conjunction with the New Jersey School Construction
Corporation and New Jersey Department of Education, are pleased to announce a
national design competition for a new high school, to be constructed with state
funds as part of New Jersey’s $12 billion school construction program. As one
of the 30 Abbott, or “special needs” districts in the state of New Jersey,
Perth Amboy residents have an unprecedented opportunity to redesign schools and
the contemporary school system.
The goal of this Competition is to select an architect to design a new high
school of approximately 489,000 square feet, on a 15.3-acre site positioned as a
gateway to the city of Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Our goals for this Competition
are: to stimulate creative thinking for schools in 21st century; to build a
school that is an inspiring, challenging, and flexible learning environment; to
connect the school to the community; and to improve the educational environment
by using the planning and design process for the new school as a tool for
positive change. The design challenge is to: resist preconceived ideas of what a
high school should look like; to discard cookie cutter “one-size-fits-all”
plans; and to truly think out of the box while accepting limitations imposed by
the purposes and restraints on the uses of Abbot funds.
This is a two-stage, national design Competition. The Competition format asks
competitors to submit their concept ideas in Stage I, and for the Jury to select
four competitors who will each receive an honorarium to produce more detailed
projects in Stage II. Stage I of the Competition is open to all individuals
licensed to practice architecture in the United States, or teams led by an
individual so licensed. The Competition winner will also be required by the
Sponsor to become pre-qualified by the New Jersey School Construction
Corporation (SCC), or must be willing to work with another firm so
pre-qualified.
Stage II finalists will receive a stipend of $20,000. The winner will be
recommended to enter into an agreement for the construction of the high school.
To register for this Competition, submit a completed Registration Form (found
on the website), along with a cashier's check or money order in the amount of
$100 payable to the City of Perth Amboy. Please mail the completed Registration
Form and check to the address listed below. The Registration Form and additional
information regarding the Competition will be located on the Competition website
on or before May 12, 2003.
