The new project to develop the former site of the
Self-Defense Agency in Roppongi, or the Roppongi Boeicho Project, will
synthesize an array of complex contextual, programmatic, technological and
cultural issues. Sited at the intersection of Gaien-higashi Street and Minato-ku
Street No. 1042, the complex will be a strong presence in the Roppongi district.
The complex will offer a thoughtful and inviting integration of the site through
an architectural expression that is sensitive to its immediate context. A system
of access and circulation routes will be developed to integrate the complex's
varied programmatic elements; to establish a clear hierarchy of public and
semi-public spaces; to ensure security; and, most importantly, to give complex
users superior convenience. At the same time, the development will take
advantage of its privileged location within the city, offering panoramic views
of Tokyo, and the countryside beyond.
The complex will be comprised of approximately 300,000 m2 of commercial
office space, 30,000 m2 of commercial retail space, a 35,000 m2 five-star
quality hotel, 77,000 m2 of residential units, and a 10,000 m2 cultural
facility. Structured parking for 1,000 vehicles will be provided below grade. In
addition, the project will contain numerous service facilities and amenities
such as below-grade service docks, on-site vehicular drop-off for office staff,
residents, and retail and cultural center patrons, landscaped entry gardens, a
glass-enclosed shopping arcade, and a public plaza animated by the adjacent
cultural center and retail areas. All buildings will be strategically located to
ensure maximum visibility and identity, and take full advantage of views from
the site. The structures will also be situated to be easily accessible from the
surrounding roadway network.
Upon completion, the Roppongi Boeicho Project will be a world-class development
that creates an impressive visual identity and becomes an emblem for its users,
visitors and city residents. Viewed from points throughout the city, the Project
will be a landmark on the Tokyo skyline. At the dawn of the 21st century, the
new Roppongi Boeicho Project will be the premier address in Japan.
