Due to limitations in their present office accommo
dations, USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development) Cairo, Egypt needed a
new building for its exclusive use. The site consists of property located in the
New Maadi area of Cairo. The building size was determined through analyzing the
current organizational structure.
The new 12,000 sm office building is characterized by an angled exterior wall
that encircles the building. The spaces created between the resulting internal
walls become a series of courtyards and terraces within the building envelope
that provide views to outside gardens. Overhangs created by the wall and a
series of horizontal metal screens provide solar shading, varied from facade to
facade to accommo date sun angles appropriately. At ground level, a one-story
volume containing the public areas extends beyond the wall; skylights at the
roof level permit light to penetrate the interior.
The building s exterior is composed of two distinct facades. The angled
exterior wall is of local stone on a concrete-frame structure, while the inner
envelope is composed of a glass facade with continuous horizontal screens that
provide a secondary level of solar shading.
