Block 105 is part of the American Business Center at
the former Checkpoint Charlie and marks the intersection of the demolished
Berlin Wall at Zimmerstrasse and the old city wall of Berlin.
Designed for residential, retail, and office use, the Checkpoint Charlie
complex incorporates an existing building into three new structures and is
conceived so that the components function both individually and as one
structure. The first component is a contemporary interpretation of the prevalent
historic Kasernebau, or barrack-style building that presents a multi-story
street facade and fully or partially encloses one or more internal courtyards.
At the intersection of Friedrichstrasse and Zimmerstrasse, the bar-shaped
building flows into a rounded corner that culminate in the second component, a
circular tower which highlights the site and its historic importance. This
architectural gesture focuses the complex on the former Checkpoint Charlie
border crossing.
A courtyard building is the third component and is a U-shaped structure. Clad
in glass and limestone with painted metal details, the building completely
encloses an internal public court.
